An operator that runs its own news servers, spool, and peering arrangements rather than buying capacity from someone else. A backbone stores the articles physically and sets the real retention and completion figures behind every brand that resells it. Because several retail brands often sit on the same backbone, two accounts bought from different websites can return identical missing articles.
