A maintained document collecting a group's recurring questions and their agreed answers, reposted to the group at intervals and often mirrored in the news.answers hierarchy. Reading the FAQ before posting was the first rule of netiquette, and a bare pointer to it was the usual answer to a repeat question. Many Usenet FAQs became the earliest authoritative reference on their subject.
