Lurker

Also known as: lurking

Someone who reads a newsgroup regularly without posting. Lurking for several weeks before a first article was standard advice, since it revealed the group's charter, recurring arguments, and tone. Because reading leaves no trace in the article stream, lurkers vastly outnumbered posters, a fact regulars invoked when warning that any post reached a far larger audience than the handful of visible participants.
