Material outside the subject a group was created to cover, marked OT in the subject line when posted deliberately. Tolerance varied: some groups accepted tangents freely, others treated them as a charter violation warranting a complaint to the poster's administrator. Persistent off-topic posting was the commonest source of friction in unmoderated groups, where the only remedies were social pressure and killfiles.
