Writing a reply above the quoted text of the article being answered, leaving the full quote below untouched. Mail clients defaulting to this behavior spread the habit onto Usenet, where technical groups treated it as a breach of netiquette because it inverts reading order and preserves quoted material nobody needs. The resulting argument, framed as top versus bottom posting, recurred for decades.
